Figure 9.10. Sagittarius (the Archer). Systems concepts: expansive growth; spontaneous symmetry breaking.

In Model G and in the Brusselator, the X and Y reaction variables in a critical fluctuation cannot both increase in concentration simultaneously. Since these two species are part of a self-closing reaction loop that causes them to transform into one another, an increase in one variable (Castor) is necessarily accompanied by a decrease in the complementary variable (Pollux). Growth of a critical fluctuation inevitably causes the medium’s uniform concentration to develop a localized hill-valley dichotomy, polarized either as an X-well/Y-hill or X-hill/Y-well.

This subtlety was appreciated by the authors of the zodiac, for in addition to expressing the concept of expansion, Sagittarius also portrays the systems concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking. Astrologers tell us that the Sagittarians are torn between exploring the highest human values and indulging in the lowest sensual desires. In a similar manner, when an X-Y fluctuation grows in size, its X and Y concentrations simultaneously depart from the norm in opposite directions; one soars in magnitude as the other plunges. This bipolar theme is also implied by the dualistic form of the Archer’s body, which is half-human and half-horse. Ancient Egyptian and Assyrian engravings depict the Archer as having two heads, a human head facing forward and an animal head looking back. Sagittarius’s designation as a mutable sign again implies duality. In addition, Sagittarius’s glyph () expresses both the theme of forward expansion, the arrow, and the theme of dichotomy, the slash across the arrow shaft.
